B,<\/p>\n<p>because that way she knows that no matter what happens,<br \/>\nat least she can always find her way to me.<\/p>\n<p>And I am going to paint the Solar Systems on the backs of her hands,<br \/>\nso she has to learn the entire universe before she can say \u2018Oh, I know that like the back of my hand\u2019<\/p>\n<p>And she\u2019s going to learn that this life will hit you,<br \/>\nhard,<br \/>\nin the face,<br \/>\nwait for you to get back up, just so it can kick you in the stomach<br \/>\nbut getting the wind knocked out of you is the only way to remind your lungs how much they like the taste of air.<\/p>\n<p>There is hurt, fear that cannot be fixed by band aids or poetry<br \/>\nso the first time she realizes that Wonder Woman isn\u2019t coming<br \/>\nI\u2019ll make sure she knows she does not have to wear the cape all by herself<br \/>\nbecause no matter how wide you stretch your fingers,<br \/>\nyour hands will always be too small to catch all the pain you want to heal.<\/p>\n<p>Believe me, I\u2019ve tried<\/p>\n<p>And baby, I\u2019ll tell her, don\u2019t keep your nose up in the air like that<br \/>\nI know that trick, I\u2019ve done it a million times<br \/>\nYou\u2019re just smelling for smoke so you can follow the trail<br \/>\nback to a burning house so you can find the boy who lost everything in the fire<br \/>\nto see if you can save him.<\/p>\n<p>Or else find the boy who lit the fire in the first place to see if you can change him<br \/>\nBut I know she will anyway, so instead, I\u2019ll always keep an extra supply of chocolate<br \/>\nand rainboots nearby.<\/p>\n<p>Because there is no heartbreak that chocolate can\u2019t fix.<br \/>\nOk, there\u2019s a few heartbreaks that chocolate can\u2019t fix,<br \/>\nbut that\u2019s what the rainboots are for because rain will<br \/>\nwash away everything if you let it.<\/p>\n<p>I want her to look at the world through the underside of a glass bottomed boat<br \/>\nTo look through a microscope at the galaxies that exist on the pinpoint of a human mind<br \/>\nBecause that\u2019s the way my mom taught me.<\/p>\n<p>That there\u2019ll be days like this<br \/>\nthat there\u2019s be days like this my mama said<br \/>\nWhen you open your hands to catch, and wind up with only blisters and bruises.<br \/>\nWhen you step out of the phone booth and try to fly<\/p>\n<p>And the very people you want to save are the ones standing on your cape<br \/>\nWhen your boots will fill with rain and you\u2019ll be up to your knees in disappointment<br \/>\nand those are the very days you have all the more reason to say thank you<\/p>\n<p>because there\u2019s nothing more beautiful than the way the ocean refuses to stop<br \/>\nkissing the shoreline no matter how many times it is sent away.<\/p>\n<p>You will put the win in winsome \u2026 lose some<br \/>\nYou will put the star in starting over and over.<\/p>\n<p>And no matter how many landmines erupt in a minute<br \/>\nbe sure your mind lands on the beauty of this funny place called life.<br \/>\nAnd yes, on a scale from one to overtrusting, I am pretty damn naive.<\/p>\n<p>But I want her to know that this world is made out of sugar.<br \/>\nIt can crumble so easily.<br \/>\nBut don\u2019t be afraid to stick your tongue out and taste it.<br \/>\nBaby, I\u2019ll tell her, remember your mama is a worrier<br \/>\nand your papa is a warrior.<\/p>\n<p>And you\u2019re the girl with small hands and big eyes who never stops asking for more.<br \/>\nRemember that good things come in threes and so do bad things and<br \/>\nalways apologize when you\u2019ve done something wrong<\/p>\n<p>but don\u2019t you ever apologize for the way your eyes refuse to stop shining,<br \/>\nyour voice is small but don\u2019t ever stop singing.<\/p>\n<p>And when they finally hand you a heartache,<br \/>\nwhen they slip war and hatred under your door and offer you handouts on street corners<br \/>\nof cynicism
