\nas loud as we can. Off key.
\nNot even a semblance of harmony.
\nDriving home in a blue Comet singing
\nI\u2019ll Be Seeing You<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0Love Is a Rose<\/i>.
\nThe love songs of war. The war songs
\nof love. Mixing up verses, eras, words.
\nSongs from stupid musicals.
\nComing in strong on the easy refrains.
\nStraining our middle-aged voices
\ntrying to reach impossible notes,
\nreconstruct forgotten phrases.
\nCole Porter\u2019s Anything Goes.
\nShamelessly la la la-ing
\nwhole sections. Forgetting
\nthe rent, the kids, the men,
\nthe other woman. The sad goodbye.
\nThe whole of children. Forgetting
\nthe lost dog, Polio. The gret planes
\npregnant with bombs. Fields
\nof white headstones. All of it gone
\nas we struggle to remember
\nthe words. One of us picking up
\nwhere the others leave off. Intent
\non the song. Forgetting our bodies,
\ntheir pitiful limbs, their heaviness.
\nNothing but three throats
\nbeating back the world\u2013Laurie\u2019s
\nradiation treatments. The scars
\non Christina\u2019s arms. Kim\u2019s brother.
\nMolly\u2019s grandfather. Jane\u2019s sister.
\nSinging to the telephone poles
\nskimming by. Stoplights
\nblooming green. The road,
\na glassy black river edged
\nwith brilliant gilded weeds. The car
\nan immense boat cutting the air
\ninto blue angelic plumes. Singing
\nBlue Moon<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0Paper Moon<\/i>
\nand\u00a0Mack the Knife<\/i>, and\u00a0Nobody Knows<\/i>
\nthe Trouble I\u2019ve Seen.<\/i><\/div>\n
