Good enough name for me,<\/em> my father said<\/div>\n
the day I was born.<\/div>\n
Don’t see why
\n<\/em><\/div>\n
she can’t have it, too.
\n<\/em><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/em><\/div>\n
But the women said no.<\/div>\n
My mother first.<\/div>\n
Then each aunt, pulling my pink blanket back<\/div>\n
patting the crop of thick curls<\/div>\n
tugging at my new toes<\/div>\n
touching my cheeks.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
We won’t have a girl named Jack,<\/em> my mother said.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
And my father’s sisters whispered,<\/div>\n
A boy named Jack was bad enough.
\n<\/em><\/div>\n
But only so my mother could hear.<\/div>\n
Name a girl Jack,\u00a0<\/em>my father said,<\/div>\n
and she can’t help but
\n<\/em><\/div>\n
grow up strong.
\n<\/em><\/div>\n
Raise her right,\u00a0<\/em>my father said,<\/div>\n
and she’ll make that name her own.
\n<\/em><\/div>\n
Name a girl Jack
\n<\/em><\/div>\n
and people will look at her twice,\u00a0<\/em>my father said.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
For no good reason but to ask if her parents
\n<\/em><\/div>\n
were crazy,\u00a0<\/em>my mother said.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
And back and forth it went until I was Jackie<\/div>\n
and my father left the hospital mad.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
My mother said to my aunts,<\/div>\n
Hand me that pen,\u00a0<\/em>wrote<\/div>\n
Jacqueline\u00a0<\/em>where it asked for a name.<\/div>\n
Jacqueline, just in case<\/div>\n
someone thought to drop the\u00a0ie.
\n<\/em><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/em><\/div>\n
Jacqueline, \u00a0just in case<\/div>\n
I grew up and wanted something a little bit longer<\/div>\n
and further away from<\/div>\n
