Here are three of the most prominent versions.<\/p>\n<p>1.<\/p>\n<p>I, too dislike it:<br \/>\nThere are things that are important beyond all this fiddle.<br \/>\nThe bat, upside down; the elephant pushing,<br \/>\na tireless wolf under a tree,<br \/>\nThe base-ball fan, the statistician&#8211;<br \/>\n&#8220;business documents and schoolbooks&#8221;&#8211;<br \/>\nThese phenomena are pleasing,<br \/>\nbut when they have been fashioned<br \/>\nOnto that which is unknowable,<br \/>\nwe are not entertained.<br \/>\nIt may be said of all of us<br \/>\nthat we do not admire what we cannot understand;<br \/>\nenigmas are not poetry.<\/p>\n<p>2.<\/p>\n<p>I, too, dislike it: there are things that are important beyond all this fiddle.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">*****<\/span>Reading it, however, with a perfect contempt for it, one discovers in<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">*****<\/span>it, after all, a place for the genuine.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">***********<\/span>Hands that can grasp, eyes<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">***********<\/span>that can dilate, hair that can rise<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">*****************<\/span>if it must, these things are important not because a<\/p>\n<p>high-sounding interpretation can be put upon them but because they are<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">*****<\/span>useful. When they become so derivative as to become unintelligible<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">*****<\/span>the same thing may be said for all of us, that we<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">***********<\/span>do not admire what<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">***********<\/span>we cannot understand: the bat<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">*****************<\/span>holding on upside down or in quest of something to<\/p>\n<p>eat, elephants pushing, a wild horse taking a roll, a tireless wolf under<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">*****<\/span>a tree, the immovable critic twitching his skin like a horse that feels a flea<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">*******************************************************<\/span>the base-<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">*****<\/span>ball fan, the statistician\u2014<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">***********<\/span>nor is it valid<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">*****************<\/span>to discriminate against &#8220;business documents and<\/p>\n<p>school-books&#8221;; all these phenomena are important. One must make a <span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">*******************************************<\/span>distinction<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">*****<\/span>however: when dragged into prominence by half poets, the result is not<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">*************************************************<\/span>poetry,<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">*****<\/span>nor till the poets among us can be<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">***********<\/span>&#8220;literalists of<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">***********<\/span>the imagination&#8221;\u2014above<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">*****************<\/span>insolence and triviality and can present<\/p>\n<p>for inspection, &#8220;imaginary gardens with real toads in them,&#8221; shall we have<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">*****<\/span>it.
